Some tests give accurate results only if you prepare for them. A fasting blood sugar test, for example, needs at least 8 hours without food or drink other than water, while HbA1c and random sugar tests need no fasting. Please follow the instructions your doctor gives you, do not stop any medicine on your own, and tell the lab staff if you have eaten before a fasting test.
Only for some tests. Fasting blood sugar needs at least 8 hours without food or drink other than water, and a cholesterol test may need 9 to 12 hours if your doctor asks for a fasting sample. Tests such as HbA1c and random blood sugar need no fasting. Follow your doctor's instructions.
Fasting sugar measures your blood glucose at one moment after an overnight fast. HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over about the past two to three months and does not need fasting.
Imaging and specialised tests such as sonography, X-ray, Doppler and pathology panels are listed in our separate diagnostics catalogue.
